Erick Calderon, who works under the pseudonym Snowfro, is an artist based in Houston, Texas. Prior to his current practice, he spent eighteen years operating a ceramic tile company. Calderon is the founder of Art Blocks, a platform for creating and collecting generative artworks produced on demand. His practice encompasses both physical and digital media, including ceramics and installations using light. He frequently develops complex digital systems that require collector participation, placing the audience in the role of active contributor to the final work.
The series *send/receive* is a conceptual work governed by a participatory system running on the Ethereum network. Each collector becomes a co creator, first designing a small pixel character, or sprite, to represent their presence. The visual state of every piece in the series is determined by the collective actions of all owners. An individual can set their token to send, to receive, or to do both at once. These settings directly affect the entire network of works. Tokens set to receive display a flow of sprites from other participants, while sending tokens show their own sprite pulsing outwards from the centre. The global balance dictates the pace and distribution of this activity.
The work explores the dynamics of support and attention within a networked community. Calderon states the project was inspired by the sentiment behind communal expressions of encouragement. The system makes tangible the consequences of individual choices, translating the impulse to give or to take into a visible, collective outcome. The artwork thereby functions as a constantly changing portrait of the community’s shared intention, a real time visualisation of an interdependent social field. It is a quiet reflection on presence and the subtle ways individual actions contribute to the state of a larger whole.
