The note for this work directly references the psychological concept of a shadow self, which the artist states contains “repressed emotions, thoughts, desires, insecurities and fears”. The painting visualises this idea through a composition of figures rendered in a dark palette and with agitated marks. The forms appear to blend and separate, suggesting an internal duality.
