Aranda\Lasch

Aranda\Lasch is a design studio based in New York and Tucson. Their work is held in the permanent collections of The Museum of Modern Art, New York, and the Art Institute of Chicago. The studio's practice extends into generative systems, exploring algorithmic possibilities through works published on the Tezos network under the name Aranda\Lasch.

The studio builds systems that model processes of construction and pattern formation. The series *Coiling 1*, for example, employs a cellular automata algorithm to generate complex woven baskets. The system uses a defined rule set to guide the growth of each weave across a spherical form, ring by ring. This self referencing process ensures that each resulting pattern is intricate and adaptive. The series *Henge* similarly uses algorithms to reimagine prehistoric stone circles, treating ancient construction as a precedent for generative order and place making.

Aranda\Lasch’s work investigates principles of assembly, both natural and man made. *Coiling 1* translates the craft of weaving into a computational process, producing forms that are both ordered and organic. The resulting baskets appear as complex spherical architectures, their patterns governed by logic yet possessing great variety. *Henge* engages with deep architectural history, specifically the monolithic constructions of prehistoric cultures. The project speculates on these ancient sites as expressions of geometry and ritual, using code to explore the fundamental acts of stacking and alignment that create meaningful space. Across these series, the studio examines how simple rules can generate complex systems, connecting contemporary computation with elemental forms of making.
