Michaël Zancan
Kumono Shingou #40
This unique digital image is from the series Kumono Shingou, a title derived from a poem and meaning “Cloud Signals”. In an accompanying note, Michaël Zancan describes his method for depicting a city he had not yet visited. The composition is generated by a computer program following a set of rules. These rules employ a limited colour palette, specific tree forms, and abstract shapes derived from Japanese cultural symbols such as the rising sun or a kakemono scroll. This systematic approach produces an imagined landscape, one informed by the artist’s interest in the indivisible tangle of nature and urbanism.
