Michaël Zancan is a generative artist based in Bordeaux, France. He came to digital art from a background in both oil painting and computer programming, disciplines the sources state he has practised for four decades. Publishing his work under the name Zancan, he synthesises the sensibilities of these two distinct fields. His coded works carry forward painterly concerns with composition, colour and texture, translated into a logical, algorithmic framework.

Zancan’s method involves writing code to produce complex visual systems. The results often suggest abstracted natural and architectural scenes, a mode he describes as a figurative generative style. His series `Garden, Monoliths` and `Lushtemples` build intricate landscapes where organic foliage grows around hard edged geometric structures. He explicitly incorporates chance and error into his process. `A Bugged Forest`, for example, is a series that originated from a software bug which the artist chose to preserve and develop rather than correct, relinquishing a degree of control. Many of his digital compositions are also designed for physical output as plotter drawings, connecting the code to a tangible mark.

The work consistently examines the interplay between natural processes and human made constructions. `(kinder)Garden, Monuments`, a collaboration with the artist Yazid, uses the simple form of a cube to reflect on the universal acts of childhood play and building. By establishing a clear set of rules from which complex worlds emerge, his practice connects to a history of systematic art that includes figures like Sol LeWitt. The resulting compositions are not static images but generative systems, offering a space to contemplate the balance between order and randomness, growth and decay.
