Ciphrd, the artist Baptiste Crespy, is a French software engineer and programmer. His artistic practice is grounded in his professional experience, emerging from a sustained interest in creative coding. Ciphrd is also known as the founder of fx(hash), an open platform for generative art which he established in 2021 as an experimental project for artists to publish their work.

His work investigates autonomous systems and the ways in which simple rules can produce complex results that resemble life. This approach is evident in the work held in this collection, ‘my d.l.a. cube’, which employs a process known as Diffusion Limited Aggregation. The artist notes that the work was computed and rendered in real time using the software Touch Designer. This method, where particles moving randomly aggregate to form fractal patterns, is consistent with his stated interest in building systems from which unpredictable behaviours can emerge.

The resulting forms in his work often appear organic, creating a dialogue between computational processes and natural phenomena. By building and deploying these systems, both in his art and through the platform he created, Ciphrd examines the fundamental principles of creation, growth, and complexity.
