Ethereal Microcosm #110

This simulation presents what the artist calls a form of artificial life within a contained digital environment. The work is based on a scientific paper by Jeff Jones concerning physarum transport networks. Ciphrd’s programme populates the screen with a high number of agents, which are divided into different species. Each species follows its own set of rules and interacts with distinct substrates. These interactions cause the agents to evolve and mutate, giving rise to complex, stabilising patterns from a previously determined systemic origin. The work is an example of the artist’s investigation into emergent behaviours.
