Studio Yorktown

Studio Yorktown is the practice of Kwame Bruce Busia, a multi disciplinary creative based in London. With a background in architecture, Busia transitioned into graphic design and communications, where he accumulated extensive experience. He later established a studio to create digital assets and mockup templates for other designers and artists. Since 2021, Busia has focused on producing his own series of generative works, drawing upon his formative experiences in spatial design and conceptual thinking.

The artist employs code, often using the p5.js library, to build generative systems that explore defined conceptual frameworks. The `Alleles` series, for example, generates compositions from simple arrangements of squares. Each output is paired with a unique textual 'generative genetic report' that suggests a biological interpretation. Other series, such as `Perpendicular Inhabitation` and `Tekton: Optima`, use algorithmic rules to construct abstracted architectural scenes from clean lines and controlled palettes. Across his work, Busia's stated method prioritises simple forms, harmonious colour, proportion and a meticulous attention to detail.

The work investigates the human condition, frequently through the abstracted lens of built environments and urban experience. `Perpendicular Inhabitation` explicitly references the architecture and atmosphere of 1980s Japan to explore feelings of optimism and a specific nostalgia for times not personally experienced. Its compositions of stark vertical lines and stylised cityscapes consider the relationship between manufactured spaces and a sense of future possibility. Drawing inspiration from modernism and Eastern design philosophies, the artist invites viewers to examine outputs closely, allowing subtle textures and compositional details to emerge over time. His work has been presented at events including Art Basel Miami Beach and Proof of People in London.
