Laurence Fuller

Laurence Fuller is an artist, writer, and actor from Britain and Australia. He received classical training at the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School, a foundation in performance and verse that informs his contemporary digital work. Raised in a family involved with the arts, with a mother who was a painter and a father who was an art critic, his practice brings together literary and visual traditions. He works across these disciplines to produce compositions that are both textual and pictorial.

A central part of Fuller's method is what he calls Cinematic Poetry. This practice involves the combination of his original verse with moving images and distinct visual aesthetics. His writing serves as the primary material for his compositions, which are often realised through collaboration with musicians and technologists. In some series, generative systems interpret his poems to create the visual output, translating literary structure into coded form. The works in this collection exemplify this approach, each being presented with a unique poem by the artist.

The concerns in Fuller’s work often relate to Romanticism, mythology, and the human relationship with the natural environment. His poems employ narrative and allegory, using sensory details to explore themes of perception, transience, and struggle. In SOHO ~ Ice Cream, the melting of ice becomes a metaphor for fleeting urban moments, while THE MOUNTAIN GOAT & THE ROCK presents an allegory of persistence. By pairing written verse with a visual counterpart, Fuller encourages a reading where each element illuminates the other, creating a contemplative space for the viewer.
