Alejandro is a creative coder, architect, and teacher based in Rotterdam. Identifying as an architectural scholar, their practice is situated at the intersection of structured design and computational art. Their generative work is published on platforms dedicated to long form digital art, including fx(hash) and fx(params). This collection includes significant holdings from two of their series, *Pensado a mano* and *Enfantines II. Enfantillages Pittoresques*.
The artist’s method involves building complex algorithmic systems that often have an educational purpose. The code for the *Enfantines* series, for example, is published openly for others to study. This particular project, *Enfantines II. Enfantillages Pittoresques*, employs predefined plots, advanced colour blending, and WebGL shaders to generate its compositions. Each work can be experienced in two distinct modes. In its silent state, the algorithm operates on its own visual logic. When audio is activated, the system uses piano compositions by Erik Satie as an input, with the music directly affecting the parameters of the drawn strokes and tempering the system's randomness.
The conceptual framework for *Enfantines II* is a direct response to Erik Satie’s 1913 piano pieces of the same name. Just as Satie sought to familiarise children with the structures of modern music, Alejandro’s algorithm aims to introduce artists to the foundational patterns of creative coding. The outputs, which the artist notes describe as having a fresh, childish style, evoke biomorphic or microbial forms. The artist also connects these outputs to the “human animals” of the CoBrA painters Corneille, Constant, and Appel. The work therefore establishes a dialogue between early twentieth century modernism and contemporary generative practice, exploring the creation of spontaneous forms from a rule based system.
