Neoformix

Neoformix is the name used by the artist Jeff Clark, who is based in Toronto, Canada. His artistic practice emerges from a professional background in data visualisation and generative design. This foundation in discovering and illustrating patterns within complex information systems informs his approach to creating art. He publishes his work on platforms including fx(hash) and fx(params), with his series also forming part of the ElectroMycelium collection.

The artist’s works are generated entirely with code, created by Clark using standard javascript. Each series operates as a self contained system governed by a set of defined parameters and probabilistic outcomes. For the `Moonlit Mountains` series, for instance, the program generates landscapes by choosing variables for features such as mountain steepness, tree density, moon phase and fog level. Certain visual elements, like a blue moon or a shooting star, are assigned a low probability, making them rare occurrences within the edition. Some projects, such as `Luminocity`, are dynamic and allow the viewer to alter the scene’s time of day or rendering resolution.

The central concern in the work is the relationship between pattern and chaos. From a logical foundation of code and numerical distributions, scenes emerge that appear organic and atmospheric. The works frequently reference traditional art historical subjects, particularly landscape painting. Series such as `Flowers and Sky` are explicitly inspired by impressionist art, using simulated brushstrokes to render natural forms. Other projects emulate the appearance of chalk drawings or field sketches. In this way, Neoformix investigates how the precise language of programming can be used to generate expressive and seemingly spontaneous compositions.
